Chapter Thirty-Six
Nora
Whoa. If every time Rafael dialed up the knight in shining armor act I lost a little bit of my IQ – then I think I just lost my doctorate. And what if it wasn’t an act? I mean, was he serious? It was officially time to call Rebecca. As nuts as she would get about this, I knew her loyalty was unquestionable. I also knew that Rebecca was my love-life/relationship guru and would steer me in the right direction. I took my phone into the bathroom and shut the door. Holding the dialing phone to my ear, I turned on the faucet to drown of the noise.
The phone picked up on the first ring.
“Oh my God!” Becca shouted. “Have you seen the headlines?” she didn’t give me any time to respond before adding. “Because everyone else in the world has.”
“Hello to you too, Bec,” I murmured. I closed the toilet lid and sat down. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but…I need your advice.” I wrinkled my nose, the words bitter in my mouth. Rebecca was constantly giving unsolicited advice; the last thing I ever expected to do was encourage her. Rebecca scoffed on the other end of the line.
“Whatever the question is – lie flat on your back, point your heels to the heavens, and think of a tiara on your head. Whatever he wants to do baby. He says jump, you ask how high.”
“Rebecca!” I rolled my eyes. Typical Becca. “This is serious.”
“So was my statement, but okay, okay, I’ll try for a more sensible, Nora-approved response. Just give me one second honey, I just got back to my apartment.” I could hear the clink of keys and the crumpling of a paper bag on the other end. “Okay, shoot.”
“He asked me if I would consider moving here.”
“Oh my…ugh and you left him hanging?” she asked it as if I had walked past a child hanging by his fingertips from a mountain.
“Rebecca, I’ve been here for three days!”
“So?”
“So there’s something wrong with that!” I exclaimed, and then cringed. I forgot Rafael was in the next room. “A notoriously womanizing prince just asked me to move to Norosa to be with him…the same one who – oh you’ve seen the photos! Doesn’t it strike you as odd that he would invite me to stay here? He’s known me for like five minutes. Help me translate this behavior into Nora-terminology,” I begged.
“I think you’re thinking too much,” Becca commented, reminding me of what Zerifa said yesterday. “You never take these risks in life. Everything you do is so calculated. For once in your life I think you should jump in.”
“Yeah, but shouldn’t I start with something smaller like a spur-of-the-moment vacation?”
“Go big or go home, Dr. Sapienta.”
I exhaled. I could hear Rafael in the bedroom now.
“Yes, well. On that note…Goodnight, Dr. Wang – impulsive advice extraordinaire.” Rebecca laughed on the other end.
“Well they do call me Dr. Wang…” This time I laughed.
“I know I don’t need to say it, but I still will: Don’t tell anyone anything we just talked about.
